The idea failed miserably the first time
Search engine giant Google came up with the idea of Google TV way back in May 2014 and the idea to bring the internet into living room seemed exciting to all. It was an idea that had a lot of potential but an overwhelming majority of people who tried the gadget later in fall were bitterly disappointed. Major cable TV channels blocked Google from airing their programs and this robbed Google TV its main selling point. Soon even Google realized that there was not much left in the project though it periodically kept reminding people about it saying it planned to come up with updates.
An easier user interface with many apps preinstalled
However, recently Google came out with plans to revive the project by fitting Google TV into Sony TV’s and packing in a lot more features than earlier planned. Probably it has to do with the idea of countering smart TV from Samsung. Google says that user interface has been made simpler and it is now possible to play You Tube videos much more easily. Users can access TV programs more easily and movies in both streaming and over the air formats are easy to find and play in this 2nd avatar of Google TV. Good news is inclusion of more than 50 apps in Google TV from Android market that makes it an exciting offer for the people.
The first time that Google talked about internet TV last year made people sit up and take notice as they were excited about cutting all wires and cables to view programs on TV. Google TV promised much more in fact; it allowed people to search all TV programs and then choose and play what they liked. However, Google has matured and not talking of divorcing from conventional TV anymore. Probably it has dawned upon the search engine giant that it requires many more efforts from the industry and not just Google alone (such as Apple TV) to make Internet TV a success. Till then, Google TV in the form of new generation smart TV’s from Sony have the potential to carry forward the idea.
