Following the huge success of the ultimate smartphone from Samsung, the Samsung Galaxy S3, the Korean tech-giant is planning on writing a similar story on the pages of smartphone history with its upcoming release, which happens to be nothing but a compact version of the fabulous Galaxy S3 itself. Titled in a very straightforward manner as the Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini, this new smartphone is intended (by the company) to serve the needs of those who wish to own the brilliant set of features and technologies that are offered by the bigger S3, but in a more hand-and-pocket-friendly package. And that is exactly what the people across the planet had been expecting from this new model, until October 11, when the specs for the Mini version were revealed and along with it the fact that along with a cut-down in size, the Koreans have worked a cut-down in the software arena too.
Although, the day of announcement for the release of Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini brought forward an overview of all the parts and tools that would make the clockwork of this new Smarty work, nothing was revealed regarding the launch date or the price. For now, all that we’ve got are hazy details and speculations that place the price of S3 Mini in the bracket of Rs 26,000 – Rs 28,000, and the launch date somewhere before the end of this year. Now, coming to the details that we do know for sure; one look at this new entrant, and you would instantly notice the smaller (in comparison to the larger Galaxy S3) 4.0 inch Super AMOLED WVGA screen, which comes with a resolution of 800×480 pixels and a pixel-density of 233 ppi. Housing this compact display is a more compact body, which is Galaxy S3 in miniature. Carved with overall dimensions of 121.55mm by 63mm by 9.85 mm, Galaxy S3 Mini carries a bulk weight of 111.5 grams only.
Zooming in to have a look on the hardware and software that drive this Mini smartphone, we find ourselves exploring a toned-down version of the Galaxy S3. Featuring a less powerful 1GHz dual-core processor at the heart of the machinery, Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini has dropped a lot of gear on its journey that started from where Galaxy S3 stands today. For the rear-facing camera, pixels have been dropped, bringing it to a 5 MP rating as against the 8 MP of the original model, though, the LED flash and Auto Focus accompanied with it remains intact. The front camera, on the other hand, has been changed completely, with a VGA unit replacing the older 1.9 MP camera. Even the battery power has been diminished to a 1500mAh unit, which means a regular recharge is a must.
But, on the brighter side of things, an upgrade has been introduced in the form of the latest version of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean operating system, in place of the Ice Cream Sandwich that runs the big brother. In addition to the OS, some of the other fancy and useful features that have made their way into the compact body of S3 Mini include the innovative S Beam, AllShare Play, S Voice and direct sharing of pictures over social networks. In terms of connectivity, though, again S3 Mini comes with something lacking. This time, it is the 4G LTE capability. That leaves the connectivity package with Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, GPS/GLONASS and NFC. In summary, Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini is a compact avatar of the original S3, but not just in size. The shrinking goes way beyond the cover, and that is bound to give this new entrant a tough time in the already packed marketplace.
